Getting Around Boston

Boston has a world class public transportation system, fondly known as "the T". Transportation to and from the hospital may be an important consideration, especially when choosing hotel or other housing options.

  • If you are staying at the Liberty Hotel, you just need to roll out of bed and you are at the Hospital.
  • The Holiday Inn is also a short walk away.
  • Otherwise, you may need transportation of some sort to travel between MGH and the area hotels.

Shuttle Buses

Partners HealthCare Shuttle Buses: MGH operates a fleet of FREE shuttle buses for the convenience of patients and their families, as well as hospital employees.

  • All of the shuttle buses leave from Blossom Street, between the Jackson and Gray Building entrances.
    • At Shuttle Bay #1, you will find the Charlestown Navy Yard bus.
      • The first stop is at 50 Staniford Street, which is about a block and a half away from The Bulfinch Hotel;
      • It then stops at the North Station Green Line subway station, which is approx. 1 block from a Holiday Inn Express and 2 blocks from the Onyx Hotel;
      • The bus then goes to Charlestown, MA, stopping about 1/4 mile from the Residence Inn at Tudor Wharf.
      • You can find the weekday shuttle schedule at: Navy Yard Shuttle Schedule

    • Another shuttle goes to Brigham and Women's Hospital (leaving from Shuttle Bay # 2), making a stop at the Prudential Center complex, (near a Sheraton, Hilton, and Westin Hotels).
    • There is also a bus, leaving from Shuttle Bay # 3, that goes to MIT in Cambridge, stopping along the way in the vicinity of the Marriott Hotel and Residence Inn by Marriott at Kendall Square.

  • Each shuttle bus makes a roundtrip from MGH to its destination and back to MGH. Designated stops are made on both legs of the trip.
  • On weekends, the only shuttle in operation is the Charlestown Navy Yard bus (reduced schedule).
  • For more information regarding shuttle bus schedules and routes, call the MGH Transportation Office at (617) 726 2250, or go to: Transportation Info

Hotel Shuttle: There is also shuttle service to/from the LaQuinta Hotel (aka "MGH at the Inn") in Somerville and the Beacon House on Beacon Hill.

  • The service is generally provided by the LaQuinta hotel, using its own shuttle bus; however, Partners does provide limited additional shuttle service to both the Beacon House and the hotel.
  • On the weekends, the LaQuinta operates its shuttle service on a reduced schedule. (Keep in mind, there is no Partners shuttle service to either the Beacon House or the LaQuinta on the weekends.)
  • During non-shuttle hours, if you are staying at the Beacon House and are not able to hike up the hill, go to the Information Desk in the Gray, White or Cox Building lobby and ask them to arrange for a security guard to drive you there.

The Subway System

Boston has a fabulous public transportation system, fondly known as the "T" (short for the "MBTA" of "Charlie on the MTA" fame).

  • The "T" is comprised of the subway, buses, and commuter trains.
  • The "T" uses unique colors to distinguish the various subway/commuter rail lines. For example:
    • The Red Line goes from Cambridge, through Boston, on its way toward the southern communities of Quincy, Braintree and Ashmont;
    • The Green Line travels between downtown Boston and western suburban communities such as Newton, Brighton, and Allston;
    • The Blue Line goes from downtown Boston toward East Boston and Logan Airport;
    • The Commuter Trains travel throughout eastern Massachusetts. From Boston, they go south to Providence, RI; north to seacoast communites such as Gloucester, Rockport and Ipswich; and west to Framingham and Worcester.
      • There is a Red Line station (Charles/MGH) directly across the street from the entrance to the Yawkey Building on the MGH Main Campus.
        • The Cambridge Marriott and Residence Inn are one stop away from MGH on the Red Line (Kendall/MIT).

      • There is also a Green Line station (Science Park) one block away from the Cox, Gray, and Jackson Building entrances.
        • Hotels in the Government Center area (eg. Parker House, Bostonian Hotel and Long Wharf Marriott), the Prudential Center complex (eg. Westin, Sheraton, Colonnade and Lennox), and the Chinatown - Theatre District (eg. Hyatt, Doubletree and Park Plaza) are all readily accessible from the Green Line.

    • CharlieTickets may be purchased in the lobby of each subway station.
    • Each ride costs $2.00.
    • Use of a plastic, renewable CharlieCard reduces the fare to $1.70 per ride.
      • CharlieCards may be obtained from "T" personnel at most subway stations.

    • There is no additional charge for transferring from one subway line to another, as long as you do not exit the station.

Taxis

Taxicabs are readily available everywhere in Boston.

  • There is a taxi stand in front of the White Building (the main entrance to MGH), and at the entrance to the Yawkey Building.
  • If you leave MGH through the Cox, Gray, or Jackson Buildings onto Blossom Street, the parking valet at the entrance to Cox will be happy to call a taxi for you.
  • Be advised, however, that taxis in Boston are VERY expensive (unfortunately, our taxis are amongst the most expensive in the country.)
    • If you are a CancerCenter patient and need to take frequent cab rides to and/or from the hospital, ask your medical social worker if you qualify for reduced price Taxi Coupons issued by the City of Boston.
    • All Boston-licensed taxis must accept the coupons as cash -- but, make sure you see "Boston Lic. Taxi" printed on the side of the cab. These half-price coupons do come in handy!
