Groceries
It is hard to believe, but Boston has very few supermarkets.
- The closest food market to MGH is Whole Foods, which is located just past the Holiday Inn on Cambridge Street, in the Charles River Plaza.
- It's a bit pricy; and, it focuses on organic foods.
- They feature a salad bar, a hot food bar, and an antipasto bar;
- They are noted for having the freshest local fish/seafood, and fruits/vegetables.
- There are also a few convenience stores in the area. One of the best is Pace & Son, a small, family-owned Boston legend on the Thoreau Path in the Charles River Park apartment complex, across Blossom Street from the Cox, Gray and Jackson Buildings.
- They specialize in home-made, ready-to-eat, Italian foods such as ziti and meatballs, eggplant or chicken parmesan; sandwiches to order, and a variety of pre-made salads.
- They also have a deli counter; and, a limited selection of fresh fish/seafood, poultry and meat. If you enjoy wine, they offer quite a large selection.
- They have a less-than-extensive offering of canned goods, frozen and refrigerated items, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.
- You can also take an excursion on the Partners shuttle bus headed to Brigham and Women's Hospital. There is a Shaw's supermarket near the Prudential stop. (Check here for the Shuttle Schedule)
- Or, take the Partners shuttle headed to MIT. There is a full featured Shaw's supermarket near the Landsdowne stop. (Check here for the Shuttle Schedule)
- If you are staying at one of the Residence Inns, let the front desk personnel know what groceries you need; as a complimentary service, they will do the shopping for you and deliver the groceries to your suite.
